In the last few years, the RIAA has made many updates to how it certifies albums released as Platinum or Gold. Recently, it added streaming from sites like Spotify, Tidal, and Apple Music as a metric, and more recently they decided to tweak the numbers. In todays market, 1500 audio/video streams gets you 1 album sale. Additionally, 150 streams gets you a single sale. After updating the formula the RIAA had to update the sales numbers, which pushed Kendrick's To Pimp A Butterfly to Platinum status.
Given the cause for celebration in the TDE camp, everyone was surprised with the response by TDE boss Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith a.k.a. Dangeroo Kipawaa. To say it plainly he wasn’t too excited about the change as he tweeted,
“No cheat codes 2 platinum… #TDE. We don’t stand behind this @RIAA bs. ole skool rules apply. 1 million albums sold is platinum. until we reach that #, save all the congrats.”
